Van Andel Arena
Grand Rapids, MI

VCS was called in to redesign the signage for Van Andel Arena when arena board members had concerns about initial designs from another firm. An arena consultant who had worked with VCS before recommended our firm when the board discussed finding additional designs.

We responded by having several of our designers develop looks for the project that ranged from conservative to cutting edge.

Van Andel board members narrowed their final choices to three designs — all from VCS. They then selected the most cutting edge design.

Because the signs are at ground level, we used fiber optic illumination rather than neon in the sports figures for safety. A rotating color wheel was built into the fiber optic system to provide the figures with constantly-changing colors. And the sign elements were designed with rounded edges to avoid injuring pedestrians.

The highly custom job involved routed sign faces, three-dimensional and edge-lit letters and an electronic message center.

VCS also performed interior work for the arena, including the installation of high-resolution video screens for viewing instant replays.
